When Parts Work and Creativity Collide

Here’s a question I never thought to ask myself until recently: Which of my parts helped me write this song?

Recently in couple’s therapy my partner and I were each exploring a part that was coming up in a pattern for us - each part was different, but acting to protect us and keep us safe. It was intense work, made no less so by the fact that we work with a Somatic Experiencing practitioner.

I left that session feeling a new sense of awareness, but also still coming back into myself. On the way back to the car, I noticed I was humming a song. With a jolt, I realized it was not just any song - it was MY song. The opening number from my first 10 minute musical, Pinteon. With a sudden burst of recognition, I realized it was my part singing that song - and that this part had also helped me write it, without me realizing it.

This resulted in what often happens for me - half of me feels the feelings and the other half starts completely nerding out about it. What other parts had helped me write other songs? Or poems? Stories and paintings? And how beautiful to be able to acknowledge the tender source that this music had been spoken from.

As with many things, I don’t think this requires a demand that we immediately figure out which parts have helped us create which art - or ideas, or moments of inspiration of any kind. Rather, I see it as an extension of Julia Cameron’s assertion that our inner artist is a child. And likely, many different child parts, each with their own unique perspective to share - if we are willing to listen.
